Radon is a radioactive gas that forms naturally when uranium in the soil breaks down. It seeps up through the ground and into homes through foundation cracks, gaps around pipes, floor drains, and sump pits. You can't see it, smell it, or taste it.

Saskatchewan sits on some of the most uranium-rich soil in Canada — which means radon is a bigger deal here than almost anywhere else in the country.

1 in 2 Regina homes exceeded Health Canada's radon guideline in testing by the Evict Radon National Study — leading researchers to call Regina the most radon-exposed city on the planet.

Nationally, about 7% of homes test above the guideline of 200 Bq/m³. In Saskatchewan, that number is 16%. In the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region, testing has found rates as high as 26%.

Health Canada says radon is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers in Canada, responsible for more than 3,000 deaths per year. A non-smoker exposed to elevated radon over a lifetime has a 1 in 20 chance of developing lung cancer. For smokers, that jumps to 1 in 3.

Why We Wire the Radon Fan Off a Bedroom Lighting Circuit

A radon fan runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, silently in your basement or utility room. If it ever loses power or trips a breaker, you have no idea — and your radon levels start climbing back up without any warning.

Here's the fix: wire the fan's receptacle off your bedroom lighting circuit. Same logic as smoke detectors — they're wired to circuits you actually use so you notice if something goes wrong. If that bedroom circuit trips, your lights go out that night. You reset the breaker. Your radon fan is back up.

It's not about circuit capacity. It's about passive monitoring built into your daily life. A radon contractor isn't thinking about which circuit to use for this reason. An electrician who understands both the code and how these systems actually work will wire it this way on purpose.
