3.9% More? How to Fight the 2026 SaskPower Rate Increase

As it always goes, taxes go up and they never go down.

As of Feb 1st 2026, SaskPower has raised the rate by 3.9% on electricity. Thats around 100 dollars a year for the average Regina household.

Along with grocery prices and a looming war in the Middle East affecting oil prices, it seems we cant catch a break as consumers.

Again, other than complaining and writing your MLA, theres not much you can do. Or is there?

When you think of your electrical bill, you probably think of the large equipment such as hot tubs, AC units, space heaters, etc.

While these draw a ton of electricity, there are a lot of small loads that can add up and be costing you big.

Think inefficient lighting, old deep freezes and dryers, that humidifier thats running all winter on an extension cord.

All of these things, unchecked, can make a huge difference on your power bill.

Some small things that we all know are to turn your lights off when leaving the room, only keep the fridge open when actually grabbing something, and when you open your windows, turn your furnace or AC off.

But did you know that simple things like extension cords can affect your bill?

I didnt either.

While I was doing a renovation on my own home, I had a deep freeze hooked up to a skinny 100 ft extension cord.

For some reason, we had an incredibly high bill and the meter showed it too.

I went around the house trying to find some sort of issue, and finally figured id check this.

Sure enough, next month our bill was back to normal.

I did the math, and using a 16 gauge extension cord at 100 feet, basic electrician math, I was spending an extra 50 bucks a month because of that cord.

Got your block heater on a bad cord? Are you running your block heater all night?

Try a 12 gauge cord and a timer that starts 4 hours before you start it up.

Got a garage hooked up to an extension cord?

I bet your power bill that getting a qualified electrician to dig in a real power line to it, youd be saving money within a year.

There are millions of things you can do to lighten your electrical load, and none of it needs to be hippie dippie stuff.
